Brandi Tanner, Ph.D.

I have over fifteen years of experience working with children and adolescents with learning and behavioral problems. My unique combination of experience as a special education teacher and psychologist allow me not only to conduct evaluations, but also to recommend and provide interventions that are effective and feasible.  Additionally, I am well-versed in special education procedures, Response to Intervention (RtI), and 504 accommodation plans, making me uniquely qualified to provide consultation for educational programming. I conduct comprehensive evaluations to diagnose and treat many conditions including learning disabilities, ADHD, anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, and intellectual disabilities among others.

I received specific training in autism spectrum disorders while completing my doctoral level internship in an autism clinic. I have provided services in an autism clinic, residential centers, public schools, and in private practice. My specialized expertise includes administration of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – Second Edition (ADOS-2) which is considered to be the gold standard in autism diagnosis.

I received degrees in elementary and special education from West Virginia University.  I was awarded my Ph.D. in School Psychology from University of South Florida.  I completed my APA-approved doctoral internship at the Hope Institute for Children and Families and The Autism Program of Illinois (TAP).  My postdoctoral training was completed in a private practice where I focused on assessment of developmental disorders including autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, and social emotional disorders.

  • Autism Evaluations – The evaluation process begins with an initial consultation appointment. The evaluation will include testing sessions with your child, behavior rating scales, and caregiver interview. At the feedback session, you will receive a copy of your child’s evaluation report including test results, diagnostic impressions, and specifically tailored recommendations.
  • Treatment Sessions – Treatment sessions are typically 45-50 minutes per session. The frequency of the sessions depends on the needs of the child and family. Caregivers are involved in the treatment.
  • Social Skills Groups - I lead social skills groups for children requiring practice in getting along with others and regulating behavior.  Participants have the opportunity to learn and practice a variety of skills including basic interaction and conversation skills, recognizing emotions in themselves and others, emotional regulation, sportsmanship, and others. Availability is limited as the number of participants in the group is kept small in order to allow for sufficient individualized attention for each child.

Psychological Evaluations and Services

As a licensed psychologist, I specialize in psychological evaluations and diagnose and treat many conditions including autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, ADHD, anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, and developmental disorders including intellectual disabilities. I also provide treatment for these conditions.

  • Psychological Evaluations – The evaluation process begins with an initial consultation appointment where you will share information about your specific concerns regarding your child. I will use this information to develop an individualized battery of tests. I do not use psychometrists or assistants to administer tests, so I personally administer all assessments to observe how your child approaches tasks. At the feedback session, you will receive a copy of your child’s evaluation report including test results, diagnostic impressions, and specifically tailored recommendations.
